Is anyone looking up to space for possible asteroids or meteors or comets that could potentially destroy Earth?

And if a celestial body was on a Earth or near Earth trajectory, would they let us know or try to keep it from us? What is the longest forecast possible for an ELE of the Earth over time, is it in years, decades or centuries or even millennium?
